Lowcountry Back Roads

Took a leisurely drive up to Walterboro and St George and found plenty of authentic South Carolina. And, for that extra shot of authenticity, came across a vulture convention at the intersection of Route 15 and Dead Deer. Check out my photos at facebook/backroadsclothing.Sorry, no photo of the vultures!

Lowcountry stroll

Early morning in Summerville... chirping birds, azaleas and camelias in bloom, spanish moss dripping from the gnarled oaks. It's a gentle, lovely place. No hint yet of the steamy summer to come...

Bonus Day

February 29 comes around once in 4 years - so take a leap into something unusual and unexpected tomorrow. Me? I'll be hitting the back roads of South Carolina, visiting Spell's Grocery to pick up some of their spicy sausage, checking out the boiled peanuts stand out by Route 165. I am not crazy enough to actually eat any of those boiled peanuts, though. No sir, been there, done that. There are still traces of the Old South, on those back roads. I'll be looking.

C'mon People!

Make your statement - say your piece. Complete the thought "...only in Rhode Island" and post it here, or on the Back Roads FB page. If you're clever, cynical, sarcastic or even optimistic, you could be a winner! I'll send you a Hope shirt, just don't forget to leave me a contact breadcrumb trail.
Now if I were completely cynical, I'd say that our state motto was a typo - it should be "NOPE." There are many who would agree with that, but there are also many hopeful Rhode Islanders who are working for meaningful change in our state - from entrepreneurs building businesses to maybe even a politician or two. Maybe.

The Seventies weren't all cool

During the Patriots game yesterday, I saw a tv spot for Dr Pepper that featured a font horror from the 70s - Souvenir. I've said for years that someone would eventually try to bring that font back in style. They shouldn't have. Fat, wormy serifs, ugly letter shapes impossible to kern... I was hoping I woldn't live long enough to see that come back. Oh well, the day's not over yet....!
